Date(s) 1942
General material designation
This file contains a textual record.
Scope and content
In this file there are three documents that deal with Japanese Canadian vessels and fisheries. One is a release request from a Mr. John Gould for the vessel “Izumi 8.” The other is a report by the shipyard advising that they are working on “emergency repairs” for Japanese Canadian vessels under the charge of the Canadian Navy. And the third, perhaps most interesting, document is an introduction of a man from Seattle to a Mr. N. Nishiguchi asking for information on the acquisition of gillnets.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
