Date(s) 1945
General material designation
This file contains a textual record.
Scope and content
This file contains an essay, presumably written by Winnifred Awmack, on the experience of camp life and the difficulties students faced balancing manual labour and school work—with no government assistance buildings for schools were crude or non-existent. Also included is a letter of recommendation from Awmack for a student requesting admission to an Adult Education class. Awmack reiterates that the government refused to help and that the United Church stepped in to give students an education in difficult times with materials from correspondence programs. Exams were graded while students were being moved east or to Japan. The bulk of the file consists of class lists and grades, as well as a forwarding list for students who have left the camp before exam results were collected.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
