                                    <p>This item contains a letter dated 23 September 1940 from <persName ref="prs:patt26">T.D. Pattullo</persName> to <persName ref="prs:king75">Mackenzie King</persName>, in which <persName ref="prs:patt26">Pattullo</persName> strongly resists the call for Japanese and Chinese citizens in the Canadian army. He justifies his position: "In the first place, it would put the Japanese in the possession of arms, when recently measures were formulated to collect arms. Perhaps an even more important consideration is that if they are called up for service, there will be a demand that they be given the franchise, which we in this Province can never tolerate."</p>
