1500: Tomojiro Suzuki
Tomojiro Suzuki
Tomojiro was born on 18 November 1877. He is also named in the file as Thomas Suzuki.
He was a farmer employed by Kawase at Number Four Road, Steveston, BC. His family
includes Mitsu Iwasaki (common-law wife) and Yasue Iwasaki [possibly Yasui Iwasaki]
(step-daughter; Mitsu’s daughter from a previous marriage). He and Mitsu were married
in 1918 in what documents in the file refer to as a “Japanese” marriage; because this
marriage was not registered, documents from the RCMP refer to Mitsu as Suzuki’s common-law
wife. His home address is listed as P.O. Box 186, Steveston, BC. He was forcibly uprooted
to Kamloops, where he died on 12 May 1942. His listed seized property includes a house
built on property owned by the Atagi brothers, Hisao Atagi and Kaoru Atagi, as well
as household belongings.

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
