Date(s) 1942
General material designation
This file contains a textual record.
Scope and content
This file contains three documents that are loosely related to the dispossession of Japanese Canadians. The first document is a report by John Shirras of the BC Provincial Police. Shirras complains that the vacuum in Richmond and surrounding fisheries after the evacuation of Japanese Canadians has been filled by “Indians” who “cause much more trouble than the Japanese.” The second document contains a similar lament about the situation in Steveston. Finally, the last document is a brief memo on the appointment of a Mr. Gillett to the British Columbia Security Commission.

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
