Scope and content
Shinichiro Hikida, Tadayoshi Furumoto, Joe Ferraro, Kazuo Yoshida, and Katie McLarin were all accused of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence: to distribute morphine. The case involved a drug set-up/bust that occurred in the Empress Rooms on Main Street, Vancouver, BC, by Corporal R.S.S. Wilson with the help of an informant, Peter Lim Chow. The file outlines a drug operation conducted between Seattle, Vancouver, and Japan using the “Heian Maru” of the N.Y.K Line and the “Hiye” and “Hikawa Maru” N.Y.K. passenger liners.

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
