Scope and content
This file contains meeting minutes for the BC Trollers Association (BCTA) in which the organization expresses its opposition to “Japanese being in the fishing field” and advocates a ten percent cut in licences issued to Japanese Canadian fishers. The BCTA also recognizes the many BC groups “battling the Oriental question” as a coalition known as the Congress of Canadian Federated Charted Associations. And they went on record as being opposed to the Dean and other UBC professors who support ‘the franchisment of orientals” requesting the “immediate dismissal” of these men. In a manifesto, the BCTA claims that a previous version of their organization “started the movement” to restrict Japanese Canadian fishing licences and will “carry on this idea to a successful conclusion.”

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
