Scope and content |
Correspondence from Alfred Stenger to George J. Alexander, Assistant Commissioner of the Provincial Fisheries Department. Stenger was doing
marketing research regarding fisheries and asked Alexander what stance the “Federal
government has taken with regard to the reestablishment of the Japanese fishing trade.”
He specifies that he is inquiring about “fishing by Japanese nationals in Japan, not to any B.C. Japanese.” Alexander responds by referring this matter to D.B. Finn, Deputy Minister
of Fisheries, Ottawa, as it “should be addressed to the Federal authorities.”

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
