Scope and content
This is the probate record of Kyuichi Nomoto, who died in Essondale Hospital on 30 June 1944. He was placed in the mental hospital after residing in New Denver. His probate petitioner and widow, Kiku Nomoto, currently residing in Greenwood, declared Nomoto and herself “Japanese National[s].” The Office of the Custodian consented to the appointment of Kiku as executrix but advised that the BC Security Commission be given details of the assets and liabilities. However, upon review by the Attorney-General, it was decided that the Minister of Finance needed to be consulted in the case of succession to a Japanese national. The Minster decided that it could not give consent and that the letter of administration be revoked. Nomoto received a pension from the United Church of Canada.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
