John Paterson to J. A. Motherwell, 18 January 1942

Pioneer Mine. B.C. January 18th 1942
To The Dept. of Fisheries
Victoria -
Gentlemen-
When, the matter of, putting the seized “Japanese Fishing Fleet” to work, is finally settled, will you please let me know; so that two of us, who are ambitious to go fishing, might secure one, or two of these boats.
We are familiar with the Pacific coast, and boats. We also consider that “Gold Mining”, is “non-essential”, in winning the “war”; we intend to devote our services, in the near future, to more pressing, or essential necessities, of our country. We are both Ex-service men.
Your help, will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Yours truly,
John Paterson

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
