Description

Title Proper RG13 VOLUME BAN-2000-01084-9 FILE HQDOJ-9-192528-1
Date(s) 1958
General material designation
This file contains a textual record.
Scope and content
This file includes the correspondence and records regarding the claim of Kichijiro Hagane of Vancouver, BC against the Canadian government, "arising from maltreatment received in connection with the removal of Japanese from the Canadian west coast during World War II." It appears Hagane's claim, unlike those claims brought forward in the Bird Commission, was made for more than compensation for the forced sale of property: it was made also for maltreatment during the internment. Also included is correspondence of the Department of Justice, External Affairs, and the RCMP in which officials discuss the conditions under which a claim is accepted, with reference to the legislation and regulations which legalized the internment as well as much discussion of the Bird Commission (including a copy of the Bird Commission report). Hagane appears to have been insistent, threatening to sell his story to the press if he was not satisfied by the government's response. This file also includes some correspondence of German Canadians also filing claims against the Canadian government.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
