Office of the Custodian of Enemy Property to Mr. Yojiro Takimoto, 17 November 1944

Extract referring to sale from letter on file dated November 17, 1944.
Mr. Yojiro Takimoto
Reg. No. 10672
East Lillooet, B.C. Dear Sir:
Re: Lots 2, 3 of Lot 16, Blk. 2, Lot 245, G.1, Map 3785 .
"Your letter of October 20th regarding liquidation of your real property at Haney has been received, and while the Custodian can appreciate that the disposal of your property is a matter of great personal concern to you, we must point out that the sale of all Japanese owned properties is being carried out as a part of a policy of liquidation outlined by the Canadian Government on the basis of independent appraised values, and this office is not in a position to consider any alternative.
For your information we have to advise you that the Custodian has accepted an offer of $6500.00 for Lot 1 only on which the dwelling at Haney is situated, of which $4000.00 is being received as a down payment, the balance being payable at 5% within two years. The adjoining property, namely, Lots 2 & 3, are being sold for $1600.00 cash. When sale is completed the net proceeeds will be credited to your account and available for your use in the usual manner."

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
