F G Shears Director to Mr. Masao Kawamoto, 15 January 1946
Copy for Mr. Shears.
We are in receipt of your letter of the 7th instant.
On reference to your file we notice that on June 19th you requested payment of the funds standing to your credit, at which time the sum
of $200.00 was sent to you.
There would appear to be no point in returning this sum as it is the policy of the
Custodian to remit funds standing to the credit of any Japanese entitled to receive
same.
Your reference to a claim for loss caused by evacuation is a matter in regard to which
this office is unable to advise as the evacuation of persons of the Japanese race
from the protected area was carried out under the authority of Orders-in-Council of
the Government of Canada.
Yours truly,
Director

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
