Scope and content	This file contains correspondence between Premier Hart, the Chief Engineer of Public Works, and the Nelson Board of Trade regarding the building of a highway north of Kaslo. The Nelson Board of Trade requested the use of “Japanese labor” for the road camp. According to MLA Frank Putnam, the community “is quite emphatic” about this arrangement because they believe that interned Japanese Canadians “should be put to some useful work.” On principle, the Premier agreed that this would be “suitable winter work” and suggested that the Federal government be informed of this proposal. Ultimately, however, the Premier decided that “there are no funds available” to pursue this project.
