Scope and content
This file contains the case file for Takateru Takarabe [also listed as Takatero Takarabe] (file number 5859). Takarabe lived in Crofton on Vancouver Island for many years before being "evacuated" from his property in 1942. His case file reveals the extent to which Takarabe refused the sale and rental of his property (numerous letters of protest are within) and to which the Custodian enforced the liquidation procedure. There are several records detailing Takarabe's real property and chattels (including deeds) as well as correspondence concerning the Custodian's sale, and the disputed valuation, of his property.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
