Description

Title Proper RG38 VOLUME 405 FILE 39619
Date(s) 1942
General material designation
This file contains a textual record.
Scope and content
This file includes correspondence among the Veterans' Land Act (Securities and Properties division) and the Department of Veterans Affairs regarding the procedure to obtain title to a formerly Japanese Canadian–owned property in Mission by an undisclosed veteran in the 1960s, several years after his settlement on the property in the late 1940s. Also included is correspondence concerning the said veteran's sale of whole or part of the VLA holding and the complications that arose from this process, particularly due to the way the land was subdivided (as a result, a number of documents discuss plan cancellation to mitigate this situation). Also within are discussions concerning improving buildings on the property with VLA assistance. Also included is record and reports of the "progress" of said veteran since his settlement on the property in Mission in the 1940s and his early applications for assistance from the VLA. Documents in the file suggest that the property was seized from Takaichi Ikebuchi and Tatsuo Hayashi, as named in the file. A second property in Chilliwack is also mentioned within.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
