Scope and content |
This series consists of six directories and three immigration identification cards.
The first directory is a Japanese Telephone Directory of British Columbia. It consists
of advertisements in English and Japanese and the addresses and phone numbers for
Japanese Canadians in BC and for businesses (both Japanese-specific and non). The
cover has a red, filled-in circle and black bamboo trees. On the cover in pen it reads,
"To D Yamaura. 6750 Canada Way. Bby, BC" and two Canadian stamps (17 cent and 30 cent
stamps).
The second directory is a forty year reunion directory. The following is printed on
the cover: "1942. 1982. 40 Year Reunion. Hammond. Haney. Whonnock, Ruskin, Pitt Meadows.
Directory". Typed on a label on the cover it reads, "David Yamaura". This reunion
was for students of the Maple Ridge District in 1942. The reunion took place on August
14 and 15, 1982. Addresses and phone numbers of former students are listed alphabetically
by last name and sectioned by geographical areas lived in, in 1942.
The third directory is a fifty year reunion directory. On the cover is printed, "1942.
1992. 50 Year Reunion. Haney. Hammond. Ruskin. Whonnock. Pitt Meadows". On the cover
on a label in type it reads, "Donated by David Yamaura". The reunion took place on
October 3, 1992. Addresses and phone numbers of former students are listed alphabetically
by last name and sectioned by geographical areas lived in, in 1942. Also included
are printed photographs of Mr and Mrs Jiro Inouye in 1908, Hammon Buddist [sic] Hall
Japanese School Class in 1918, leaving kindergarten at Haney Hall in 1937 with Miss
De Wolf and Miss Mac Dougall, Maple Ridge Bukkyo Men and Womens [sic] Club in 1938,
Haney Hall in 1940, Citizens of Pitt Meadows Hall, 1942 Citizens of Hammond Hall,
and Hammond Hall in 1942 Fraser Valley Agricultural Association Directors. On the
inside of the back cover is a sketch of the municipality of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
The fourth and fifth directory is a copy of the third.
The sixth directory is a fifty one year reunion directory. On the cover is printed,
"51 Year Reunion. 1942. 1993. Japanese Settlement East Lillooet, BC". Printed on a
label on the cover it reads, "Donated by David Yamaura". The reunion took place on
October 2, 1993. Addresses and phone numbers of reunion guests are arranged alphabetically
by last name. Included are printed photographs of "Japanese Settlement East Lillooet,
BC", "First Wedding", "Class in Wartime School in East Lillooet", Girls in Kimono",
"Ishii, Kitagawa, Nitsui Farming", "Kato Taking a Nap", Hoeing Crew-Fountain Ranch",
"Working Girls", "Strong Man Itani", "Sacking Potatoes-Fountain Ranch", "Squash Grew

and menu are included. On the inside of the back cover there is a sketch of the internment
site of East Lillooet and the names of the families who lived there.

David Yamaura
was born on Townline Road in Port Hammond BC in 1925. His immigrant father, Kinoe
Yamaura, was born in Nagano-ken in Japan and his mother, Iwama (nee Iwashita), was
Kinoe's second wife. Kinoe had a daughter from his first marriage, and 6 children
from his second marriage. David's siblings consist of: Tom (born in 1921), Bill (born
in1924), Arlene Kanaye (born in 1926), Rebecca Terumi (born in 1930), and Sumiye (Ebbesen)
(born in 1932). Noboko was Kinoe's daughter from his first marriage to a Kitagawa.
Kinoe worked as a night fireman at Brown's Brothers Nursery also on Townline Road.
His job was to keep the furnace hot for the hot houses.

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
