C.c. for Mr. Shears' Complaint File.
Vancouver, B.C.
Re Your file 5288
I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of November 15th, together with cheque for $1670.89.
In your last paragraph, you state that it would appear that you have accounted for
all the property left by me and vested in the Custodian, and you wish confirmation
to that effect.
I do not deem that I have received a fair accounting of my property sale, and therefore
do not confirm that this matter is closed. I am therefore, holding the cheque in trust
at the Canadian Bank of Commerce, Vernon, B.C., and also withholding the mailing of Title Documents of the property, until this
matter is satisfactorily cleared up.
In my letter of November 8th, I requested further advice on securing adjustment on property sale as the value
stated in your letter was unreasonably low. This you have not done. I would still
like further information on the best possible recourse in obtaining a more reasonable,
fairer settlement of the proprty sale transaction.
On November 8th, I wrote requesting you to mail me the cheque for $1670.89. About
that time, I was advised to invest in Canada Savings Bonds. Since the money held by
the Custodian was not drawing any interest, I felt that it would be better for all
concerned, if I withdrew the amount and invested it in the new series bonds. Consequently,
I requested you to send me the remaining balance of my account.
You should be aware that the net proceeds of the property sale is grossly unreasonable,
and entirely out of line with the value of the property. I feel that further negotiation
would be in line, in order to effect a more equitable settlement and would like to
open negotiations towards this end.
The assistance of your Department would be appreciated. I am also obtaining legal
advice in the procedure necessary to finalize a reasonable just settlement, instead
of the outrageous situation as it now stands.

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
