Toshiro Shimizu to Mr. F Matheson, 08 September 1947
C O P Y (for Mr. Shears)
I am writing, as you have requested, to confirm and acknowledge the cheque, the sum
of which was four hundred one dollars and fourteen cents. ($401.14), which I received on September fourth (4), 1947.
Concerning my fishing vessel, "T.S.", Victoria Licence No. 1841, I strongly disagree
to the amount that was received upon being sold by the Custodian. I want it to be
understood that my vessel was worth three (3) times as much as the amount stated and
sold by the Custodian.
The above may sound like a complaint to you, but I consider that great injustice has
been done to me and also to my property.

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
