Indenture 173674E appears to be a legal justification or explanation for the seizure
by the Custodian of the property of Masato Hayami. The document states that Masato
Hayami was a purchaser in an agreement of sale between himself and Agnes McIntyre
on 1937-04-16 for the properties described as L 13 and L14 of the W 1/2 of S 20, T
12, PL 1161. Because of his Japanese descent (police registration # 13854), the document
states that Hayami's property is subject to seizure by the Custodian under Order-in-Council
1665 of 1942. The document also states that the Custodian received an affidavit from
Francis Burnard McLellan, Notary Public, stating that the conveyance of the property
was successfully delivered to Masato Hayami on 1941-05-12, and that the Custodian
had subsequently been unable to obtain this conveyance. As such, the rest of the transfer
document states the Custodian's request to have the title of the property transferred
into "The Secretary of State of Canada acting in his capacity as Custodian under the
Revised Regulations Respecting Trading with the Enemy. (1943)"
This transfer corresponds with a table or bundle of Japanese Canadian properties:
Certificate of Vesting in Custodian: 25929.
Police Registration #: 13854.
Value of bundle (as listed on transfer 173690E): $1999.00.
The Japanese Canadian name associated with this property is Masato Hayumi.
Market value, certificate of vesting in Custodian, police registration #, name, and
value of bundle taken from transfer document 173690E.

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
