Scope and content
This is the probate record of John Eisaku Toida, a dry cleaner, who died in Vancouver on 10 December 1941. Toida owned State Cleaners on Main Street. Because none of Toida’s heirs had yet been evacuated from Vancouver, the Office of the Custodian declared that it was not “in any way concerned with this case at this time.” If his daughter, Aiko Toida, executrix of Toida’s estate, is evacuated, then the Custodian would like to be notified.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
