Scope and content
This file contains correspondence between Halford Wilson and British Columbians concerning the “Oriental question.” Some letters debate Wilson on his anti-Oriental stance (see Captain John Bowen-Colthrust to Wilson and reply; and letter from Mrs. Ryan, 11 Feb. 1940) while others express their satisfaction with Wilson’s “fight against the Peaceful Penetration of Orientals, especially Japs.” One letter of particular interest is addressed to a Mrs. Margaret Brookes who was concerned about the sale of 1420 Arbutus Street to “a Japanese.” Wilson assures her that he is doing all in his power to “prevent the intrusion on the part of Orientals in the commercial activities of [Vancouver].”

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
