Scope and content |
This file contains correspondence and records pertaining to relief provided to Japanese
internees. This includes correspondence relating to Custodian-held funds, whereby the Custodian insists upon internees using their own savings prior to being given allowances or
relief. Also included are the Consul General of Spain's discussions of relief for internees (specifically, the provision of comforts by
the Protecting Power for Japanese subjects in Canada); the Consul's advocacy for supplementary relief for applicants; and correspondence regarding
relief being decided upon based on naturalized versus national status. Also included
is references to the case of Yoshikazu Fujimoto (regarding using money from sale of property to provide relief to husband). More
generally, the file includes petitions to increase maintenance rate; petitions regarding
housing conditions; discussion of maintenance allowances; correspondence regarding
the just treatment of nationals versus Canadians; discussions of the welfare committee;
and several petitions from dependents of internees (many wives of men in work camps
without means to provide for family).
