Scope and content
This item contains a letter dated 23 September 1940 from T.D. Pattullo to Mackenzie King, in which Pattullo strongly resists the call for Japanese and Chinese citizens in the Canadian army. He justifies his position: "In the first place, it would put the Japanese in the possession of arms, when recently measures were formulated to collect arms. Perhaps an even more important consideration is that if they are called up for service, there will be a demand that they be given the franchise, which we in this Province can never tolerate."

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
