Date(s) 1942
General material designation
This file contains a textual record.
Scope and content
This file includes communications between the Soldier Statement Board and key outside figures, including T.A. Crerar, Ian Mackenzie, and others. A significant share of this file comprises communications written to Gordon Murchison, the Director of the Soldier Settlement Board, by District Superintendent Ivan T. Barnet, who was, in effect second in command and the most important figure on the ground in BC for the SSB. Much of this correspondence in the fall concerns working relations between the SSB and the Custodian's office. The file includes significant detail on the position of the Pacific Co-Operative Union in the matter of the leases (which is of importance in sorting through details with respect to farm lands and berry producing) as well as correspondence related to some individual cases.

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
