Reference Re: Regulations in Relation to Chemicals
Reference re Regulations in Relation to Chemicals, [1943] 1 DLR 248
This is a reference case regarding several orders in council which regulated certain
chemicals within Canada; of principle concern within these regulations was the ability
of the executive to delegate authority to subordinate agencies. The SCC concluded
that the executive could delegate as needed, and found the orders in council to otherwise
be valid with a small exception regarding payment for expropriated materials that
was found to conflict with the War Measures Act.

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
