Scope and content
This file consists of assorted correspondence, memoranda, and records pertaining to the "repatriation" (or deportation) of Japanese nationals and Japanese Canadians from 1945 to 1954. It includes the following: news clippings criticizing and advocating for expulsion of Japanese Canadians; correspondence between RCMP officials on the deportation; records that illuminate public opinion at the time (particularly with regards to the validity of deportation forms); correspondence of organizations and other Japanese Canadians against the deportation policy; and RCMP correspondence dealing with the mounting requests to cancel "repatriation." Notable is correspondence and news clippings discussing two deportation test cases - those of Toyosaki Shigemitsu and Taniwa Norimichi. This file highlights the "co-operation between the Department of Labour and the RCMP in the administration of the provisions of the [deportation] Order."
