Description

Title Proper RG18 VOLUME 3567 FILE C315-36-3-A
Date(s) 1942
General material designation
This file contains a textual record.
Scope and content
This file contains a comprehensive list of Japanese "repatriates," a Report on the Administration of Japanese Affairs in Canada, 1942-1944, and a Report on the Re-establishment of Japanese in Canada, 1944-46. The report on the administration of Japanese affairs, though centred on matters of the internment, discusses property: "Japanese property is not under the supervision of the Commission of the Department of Labour, but naturally all matters affecting it have had repercussions on Japanese evacuation, employment and administration, and hence are of interest." The report also discusses "repatriation." The report on the Re-establishment of Japanese in Canada, 1944-1946 deals with matters of repatriation and re-settlement. It also reviews the findings of the 1943-44 Royal Commission on the Treatment of Japanese in Canada.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
