| Scope and content | This file consists of claims, dated from 1946 to 1947, filed by Canadians of Japanese
descent to the Department of Labour documenting economic losses caused by resettlement and the forced sale of their property.
These claims include completed standardized forms with dollar values. "Evacuees" contain
both Japanese Canadians resettled in Canada and those who "voluntary repatriated"

by Virtue & Russell (Barristers) entitled "Summary of Facts for Secretary of State re: Canadians of Japanese Origin." |

                        Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
