Scope and content |
This file includes extensive correspondence, memoranda, and records from 1946 relating
to the "voluntary repatriation," or deportation of Japanese Canadians and Japanese
nationals, and the plans taken to carry out this policy. It includes: correspondence
regarding the deportation of those with Canadian citizenship (and the revocation of
this status as per P.C. 7356); several lists of naturalized Japanese Canadians subject
to deportation; lists of "voluntary repatriates" on the sixth sailing; RCMP reports relating to the deportation of individuals; records relating to the financial
and other assistance to 'repatriates' by the government (and the cancellation of such
assistance); logistical considerations and arrangements for the deportation (e.g.
transportation, baggage restrictions); correspondence and memoranda regarding the
transfer of funds (exchange rate) and property of those being deported; discussions
with United States authorities and institutions in cooperation to carry out deportation policy; as well
as correspondence regarding working with the Canadian Liaison Mission in Tokyo. This file speaks primarily to issues of citizenship and governmental responsibility,
as the government grappled with the issue of deporting its own citizens and criticism
from the public for paying for this procedure. These records demonstrate the government's
efforts to eliminate the possibility of Japanese Canadians returning to Canada.

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
