Title Proper RG2 A-5-B REEL C-04874 FILE M ITEM 6
Date(s) 1942
General material designation
This item contains a textual record.
Scope and content
This item includes minutes of the War Committee of the Cabinet, dated 09 September 1942. These minutes discuss the admission of Japanese Canadians and nationals who had been "evacuated" out of British Columbia to universities in other parts of Canada. The item indicates that the cabinet recognized "certain risks involved, especially in science departments where government work might be going on." Its distinction between nationals and Japanese Canadians was noted, and it was argued any exclusionary provisions would affect German and Italian students as well. It was decided that admission would ultimately be left to universities to decide.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
