Scope and content
This is a letter from the Canadian Embassy, Tokyo addressed to Moichiro Tonomura. It is dated February 23, 1955, and relates to the process of immigration and citizenship status. The writer explains that it might be difficult for Moichiro and his family members to return to Canada. A rough detail translation includes: “[...] you came back after the war, therefore, you have lost your Canadian citizenship. Thus you are not allowed [..] I understand that underaged children and a spouse of Canadian citizen would be able to immigrate to Canada [...].” The process is also complicated by the fact that Reiko, their daughter, was born in Canada and does not qualify for a Japanese birth certificate.

While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
