This item contains a textual record.
Scope and content
This item comprises minutes of the War Committee of the Cabinet, dated 16 May 1942. These minutes discuss the placement of Japanese Canadians and nationals in the Canadian army. Referencing the 30 April 1942 departmental memorandum, submitted by the Minister of National Defence, it was recommended that "Canadian-born Japanese, enlisted in the Canadian Army, should be discharged ... It was felt that their presence in the Canadian Forces was inconsistent with the government policy of evacuating persons of Japanese origin from Coastal areas ...." This proposal was discussed and decided to be brought to the Department of External Affairs and National Defence for Air for consideration.

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
