Scope and content
This item includes minutes of the War Committee of the Cabinet, dated 22 May 1942. These minutes discuss a request of the UK government to undertake the "training of native coloured troops engaged in guard and security duties on ships," as well as the issue of the enlistment of Japanese Canadians in the army. The topic of enlistment and discharge is discussed in response to the meeting of May 16. It was decided further information should be obtained regarding the U.S. policy before any formal action be taken. The Committee suggested however, that "the Army might take other means to provide for the discharge of Japanese on other than racial grounds."

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
