Date(s) of material from this resource digitized | 1940 |
General material designation |
From this item, LOI has digitized one textual record or image.
|
Scope and content |
This item includes minutes of the War Committee of the Cabinet dated 17 July 1940 concerning the international situation, with specific mention
of control over firearms. In particular, these minutes note anxieties over Japanese
citizens having hold of firearms and/or explosives. In contrast, the minutes discuss
contracts with Canadians of German and Italian ancestry, whereby refusals to grant
contracts were "wholly unwarranted, and that, in view of the loyalty of the overwhelming
proportion of such groups and particularly in the old established sections, the lowest
tenderer should not be refused in such cases unless Policy enquiry indicated sympathy
with the enemy."

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
