Scope and content
This item includes minutes of the War Committee of the Cabinet dated 02 January 1941 concerning the Japanese in British Columbia. Prime Minister King submitted the report of the Special Committee (appointed 01 October 1940) to "investigate the situation of persons of Japanese and Chinese racial origin, resident in British Columbia" (Report and Recommendations of the Special Committee on Orientals in British Columbia, December 1940). Such recommendations were further explicated by H.L. Keenleyside who assured the Japanese Canadian and Japanese national citizens to whom they conferred agreed that registration was desirable. The Associate Minister of National Defence argued against publicizing the intention to intern Japanese in the event of war. The Cabinet agreed to nearly all the recommendations with slight revision.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
