Scope and content
This is a b&w photograph that features a group of approximately one hundred people standing in front of a building at an internment camp. This is likely the Tonomura family with friends in Tashme. The photo appears to be taken in the fall; though the women are wearing warm jackets and there are no leaves on the trees, there is still cabbage in the garden in front of the building. The building is made of wood with tarpaper roofing. There is a mountain in the background, partially covered by thin clouds. The print appears to be a recent digital reproduction, printed on kodak photograph paper. On the back, the following is written in pencil: “Photo courtesy of George Tonomura”.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice. See our statement on terminology, and related sources here.
