Scope and content |
This is an old photograph in a cardboard folder. The folder has Japanese script embossed
on the front. The photograph features a man and woman dressed in formal attire. The
man is standing and is wearing pinstriped pants and a long black jacket, a generally
Western-style outfit. He is wearing white gloves. The woman is wearing a traditional
kimono outfit, including a head covering. She is seated. In the back of the photograph
there is a Japanese blind. A white lamp with a light bulb hangs in the top left corner
of the image. The formality of this image and their formal attire suggests that it
is a photo taken on occasion of their wedding. There are signs of decomposition on
the protective sheet of the folder.
The photograph was originally contained in a standard orange postage envelope with
the words “OLD PHOTOGRAPHS” written in pen. Another photograph (item 1995.125.1.2.6)
was also contained in this envelope.

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
