Scope and content |
This item is a Christmas greeting card. On the outside, there are two snowmen (a boy
and a girl, judging by their outfits) on a yellow toboggan. The inside shows these
snowmen holding hands and dragging the toboggan behind them. There is black text with
a greeting. In blue pen, the following is written by hand: “Dear E. Tonomura” and
“Hkira Tsuji”. The verso of the card indicates that it is from A-meri-card. The card
is enclosed in a white envelope sent from Akira Tsuji (Seattle, Wash) to John E. Tonomura
(Vancouver, BC). The postal stamp indicates that the letter was sent on December 19,
1955.

Terminology
Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese
Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment
and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes
of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological
choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
