A letter, dated November 2, 1943, from the Rosebery Japanese Women’s Assn. to Mr. G. Collins, B.C. Security Commission, Marine Building, Vancouver, B.C. The letter describes an incident which occurred on September 21, 1943, when a Mrs. Z. Kinoshita, acting as interpreter for the Women’s Association, was advocating for better water supply systems for the Rosebery camp to a “Mr. Boultbee” of the B.C. Security Commission. Mr. Boutlbee apparently slapped Mrs. Kinoshita in the face in this meeting, and the letter goes on to call this action “inexcusable” and request that representatives of the Security Commission not use force against Japanese women in the future.

Terminology

Readers of these historical materials will encounter derogatory references to Japanese Canadians and euphemisms used to obscure the intent and impacts of the internment and dispossession. While these are important realities of the history, the Landscapes of Injustice Research Collective urges users to carefully consider their own terminological choices in writing and speaking about this topic today as we confront past injustice.
